I recommend being really careful with your electronics, and to keep them out of sight as much as possible. Theft is a big deal in Peru. did you get the emails I sent a few days ago? One thing, which border crossing are you going through? Maybe you already know that the one in Huaquillas/Tumbes is kind of dangerous, whereas Macara is very simple and safe. I can send you a hostel recommendation for Lima if you like too. It's a big frantic city whereas Huaraz a little north of Lima is quainter with lots of mountains and natural beauty/hiking. Well, since the Cuenca buses operate in a low-land (tropical, humid) area along the Papaloapan river (in the state of Veracruz) it must be that they are named so because of the basin of the river Papaloapan.
