hi Chris--
sorry to hear about the close call with your camera. I recommend being really careful with your electronics, and to keep them out of sight as much as possible. Theft is a big deal in Peru.

did you get the emails I sent a few days ago? There are a few good bus companies in Peru... Ormeno and Cruz del Sur come to mind.

Take care,
Lisa.

hi Chris, I just read your post about ecuador visa and just thought I'd tell you that I've never had a problem with it upon entry from Peru. One thing, which border crossing are you going through? Maybe you already know that the one in Huaquillas/Tumbes is kind of dangerous, whereas Macara is very simple and safe.
I can send you a hostel recommendation for Lima if you like too. It's a big frantic city whereas Huaraz a little north of Lima is quainter with lots of mountains and natural beauty/hiking. Let me know if I can help in any way. Take care, Lisa.

Dear Chris, hope you are doing well every day. Just a note that I was attempting to have a look the "Cuenca" walk slideshow but the photos do not appear. I had thought it was due to the fact I use Opera as my main browser and some webpages do not function fully, but it does not work in Explorer either. Well, that is just to let you know, I know it will be fixed by YOU. Funny, I just looked up at what Cuenca means in English as it is a word somewhat familiar to me since there is a bus company of the name "Cuenca" operating in the region where I used to live in Mexico. Well, "Cuenca" is a "basin" or "mining area". Well, since the Cuenca buses operate in a low-land (tropical, humid) area along the Papaloapan river (in the state of Veracruz) it must be that they are named so because of the basin of the river Papaloapan. And I bet that "your" Cuenca is (or was) the latter - a mining area! Cuenca is a nice word, indeed, or at least I like it.
Rio Papaloapan: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R%C3%ADo_Papaloapan
Cuenca coach: you can spot it a little past the half of this page scrolling downwards - it is silver with purple stripes (there are dozens of Mexico's buses...): http://occbus.wordpress.com/autobuses-ado/

Very interesting about life in middle of South America. Must be quite the experience. I've always wanted to see life in the South there. I just ate a piece of pie I made with pumpkin, pear and apple with my own crust with sugar and seasoning just for fun. Not bad, but cannot think too clearly. Ciao for now Joseppe
