While you are a tourist in Ecuador your International Driver’s License is valid.
However, as soon as you change your status to a ‘permanent resident,’ etc, you will have to attend driving classes (I was told 8 days) and take two written drivers tests in Spanish before you can receive an Ecuadorian driver’s license.
Of course, the 100 question test and answers are available in Spanish. If you don’t speak fluent Spanish, you need to memorize all 100 questions and answers and then pass a 10 question test – TWICE (with different questions).
NOTE: The above info was given to me by an expat who has lived in Ecuador for over 3 years and speaks fluent Spanish, but you would need to verify the current situation with an representative of the Ecuadorian DOT before you switch your legal status in Ecuador.
Five days ago, we flew into Quito, Ecuador from Hue, Vietnam with a one week stopover in Portland, Oregon.
